以前 yǐ qián - Before / in the past

        yǐ qián
(一) 以前    means "before". Time word /verbal phrase + 以前 

例 ：1. 10diǎn yǐqián  wǒmen  yīdìng yào  dàojiā
              10点   以前    我们      一定  要   到家。
              We must arrive home before 10 o'clock .

          2.  chīfàn zhīqián bié wàngle xǐshǒu
               吃饭 之前   别  忘了  洗手。
               Remember to wash your hands before dinner.

            yǐ qián
（二   以 前    means in the past , expressing a comparison with  now ,and indicating a duration .
                        以前+ clause

     例：1.yǐqián wǒmen shì línjū ， hòulái tā  bāndào shànghǎi le 。
                以前 我们    是 邻居，后来 她 搬到  上海     了。
              We had been neighbours before she moved to Shanghai

             2. yǐqián wǒ shì  yīmíngjiāoshī ，xiànzài zàijiā zuò quánzhítàitài 。
                 以前 我 是 一名教师，  现在    在家 做 全职太太。
                I used to be a teacher, while I am a housewife .

Interrogative Sentences using “吗”-ma

Add "吗" to the end of a declarative sentence to make a question .

例 ：1. nǐ hǎo                   nǐ hǎo ma ?
            你好.    →             你 好  吗？
           Hello .                     How are you ?
 
      2. dàwèi  shì liúxuéshēng              dàwèi  shì  liúxuéshēng  ma ?
         大卫  是 留学生。     →         大卫  是   留学生       吗？
         David is a foreign student.          Is David a foreign student ?

       3.  nǐ  búshì    lǎo shī                        nǐ   búshì lǎoshī ma ?
           你 不是  老师 。      →          你   不是  老师  吗  ?
          You aren't a teachet .                   Aren't you a teacher ?
